This month Cristina and I would like to focus on giving and asking directions. First we want to introduce vocabulary to allow the students to ask for directions, give directions, and locate places on the street or in town. We then asked the classes to locate stores on a three dimensional map. For example, when Cristina or I asked ´"where is the supermarket" the kids would respond with answers such as: "the supermarket is next to the hotel" or "the supermarket is between the farmacy and the hotel". After we asked the kids to give us directions from one point on the map to another point. All of our students were happy to participate even when some required more time to think. In the coming weeks we would like to incorporate as many real life situations so the kids become more confident with giving or asking for directions and speaking english in general. Cristina and I think this topic is very resourceful in the real world and we hope our students can one day use this outside of school.
Here is some of the vocabulary we focused on:
Asking directions:
Where is the.....?
How can I get to the ....?
Locating places:
the .... is next to the ...
the ... is in front of the ...
the ... is opposite the ...
the ... is on the corner of ..
the ... is between ... and ...
Giving directions:
go straight on ... street
turn left
turn right
take the second corner on the right/left
the ... will be on your right/left
take ... street
